More and more people the world over are taking up a form of martial arts as a hobby as there are numerous benefits to reap from training in martial arts. Primarily martial arts are good activities to engage in for people who want to keep fit, also knowing a martial art is a good form of self defense and final training in martial arts can teach a person to become very disciplined. Some examples of popular varieties of martial arts include, Karate, Judo and Wing Chun. Each of these disciplines varies from the other and focuses of a different specific area, for instance karate is largely focus on using kicks and punches to strike and opponent whilst Wing Chun is primarily a defensive form of martial art focusing on making the most of economy of movement.

To most people the term marital arts specifies fighting techniques that originate from the far east, however there are different types of martial arts that have developed all over the world and are not necessarily specific to Asian cultures. However it is central the martial arts from the far east that are the most popular in the western world and there is a great deal of fascination surrounding them, particularly some of the spiritual aspects.
